Xinhua has yet to release further details about the issues discussed between the two leaders. The call took place just three days before Trump’s inauguration, where Chinese Vice President Han Zheng will represent Beijing.
Trump has broken with tradition by inviting several foreign leaders, including Xi Jinping, to the inauguration.
"We are willing to work with the new U.S. administration to enhance dialogue and communication, properly manage differences, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote stable, healthy, and sustainable China-U.S. relations," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday morning.
