According to reports, the sound of air raid sirens and explosions echoed throughout Jerusalem and over the Jordan River Valley after Israeli authorities urged residents to take refuge in shelters.
Reuters journalists reported that missiles were intercepted and destroyed in the skies over neighbouring Jordan. In response, Israel, Iraq, and Jordan immediately suspended all air traffic in their airspace. Israeli military radio reported that Iran had fired nearly 200 missiles at Israel.
Iranian state television confirmed that dozens of rockets were launched at Israel early Tuesday evening and broadcast a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The elite force warned that if Israel retaliated, Tehran’s response would be even more devastating.
According to Viktor Orbán’s press chief, Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister convened the National Security Cabinet on Tuesday evening. The cabinet, which includes the ministers responsible for defence and the chief national security adviser, assessed the latest developments and the potential consequences of the war in the Middle East. They also received a report on the security situation in Hungary and for Hungarian citizens currently in the region.
Viktor Orbán condemned Iran’s attack in a post on X, stating, "We pray for the safety of the Israeli people in these dark hours."
