Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov
said that he is upbeat about the upcoming international Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, as China always does a great job of organizing these kinds of events on their territory.
"I have the most optimistic expectations. We know that our Chinese friends always organize the events they hold on their territory at the highest level," he told reporters on the sidelines the Valdai Club meeting. He said the BRI fits perfectly with the processes that are developing in Eurasia with the participation of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Southeast Asian states.
"The world is becoming multipolar, with countries seeking to find reliable partners, and BRICS’ expansion is the main confirmation of this," Lavrov said, adding that nearly twenty countries have expressed interest in establishing partnership relations with the BRICS association of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. He noted that "the weight, prestige and role of an individual candidate country and, of course, its position in the international arena" were taken into account in decision-making on expanding BRICS.
