Memorials were held for the victims of the tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean region in 2004, killing more than 200,000 people in one of modern history’s worst natural disasters.

On December 26, 2004, a magnitude-9.1 earthquake off Indonesia’s western tip generated a series of massive waves that pummelled the coastline of 14 countries from Indonesia to Somalia. As reported by Al Jazeera, memorials were held in the Southeast Asian region commemorating the victims of the devastating tsunami.

Indonesia experienced the highest death toll, with more than 160,000 people losing their lives along its western coast. In Sri Lanka, where over 35,000 people perished, survivors and relatives gathered to commemorate approximately 1,000 victims who died when powerful waves derailed a passenger train.

The mourners boarded the restored Ocean Queen Express and traveled to Peraliya, the exact location where the train was swept off the tracks, about 90 kilometers (56 miles) south of Colombo.

The disaster's impact extended far beyond these regions, claiming nearly 300 lives in Somalia, over 100 in the Maldives, and dozens in Malaysia and Myanmar.
