Former US President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, has secured enough electoral votes to win the 2024 US presidential election. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was quick to congratulate his long-time ally.

According to Fox News, the former president has secured a minimum of 277 electoral votes from the states, while Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has the backing of 226 electoral votes. To be elected president, a candidate requires 270 electoral votes.

Trump has secured several key battleground states, including Pennsylvania and Georgia, which the Democrats were able to win in 2020. Previous high-profile projections have also indicated that Republicans are poised to gain a majority in the Senate.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán promptly congratulated his close ally and good friend. In a post on X, he remarked, "The biggest comeback in US political history." He added that Trump's victory was much needed by the world.

Orbán and Trump's policies and views align on many points, particularly on key issues such as the war in Ukraine. During his campaign, the president consistently promised to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine promptly and to bring both sides to the negotiating table. Viktor Orbán has repeatedly referred to Trump as the "president of peace."
