Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Beijing on Friday.

President Xi expressed his readiness to work with President Lula to steer and create a new future for China-Brazil relations in the new era, nd his confidence that a China-Brazil relationship that continues to enjoy sound and steady growth is bound to play an important and positive role for peace, stability and prosperity in their regions and beyond, writes Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying on Twitter.

President Xi welcomed President Lula and said that he is truly heartened to see President Lula fully recovered, and appreciated the high importance he attaches to the bilateral relationship by traveling long distances to China soon after his recovery. Xi pointed out that China and Brazil are the two biggest developing countries and emerging markets in the Eastern and Western hemispheres. As comprehensive strategic partners, China and Brazil share extensive common interests.

According to Brazilian media, the two presidents signed 15 agreements.

On Thursday, has called on developing countries to work towards replacing the US dollar with their own currencies in international trade, according to the Financial Times. “Every night I ask myself why all countries have to base their trade on the dollar,” Lula said in an impassioned speech at the New Development Bank in Shanghai, known as the “Brics bank,” the newspaper quotes the president.
