Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was re-elected with 87.05% of the vote in the early presidential election on Sunday.

Mirziyoyev, who has led Central Asia’s most populous nation since 2016, called a snap election after changing the constitution through a referendum which reset his term count and extended the presidential term from five to seven years, Al Jazeera reminds.

The Uzbek Central Election Committee said that over 15.6 million citizens cast ballots at the election, bringing the voter turnout to nearly 80%. According to the Tashkent Times, 4.43% of voters voted for the candidate from the Adolat Social Democratic Party Robakhon Makhmudova, 4.02% - for the candidate from the People's Democratic Party Ulugbek Inoyatov and 3.74% - for Abdushukur Khamzaev, a candidate from Ecological Party.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated his Uzbek counterpart on his reelection victory during a phone conversation, said a statement by the Kremlin, according to Anadolu Agency.

“The convincing victory in the elections confirms your high political authority, testifies to the broad popular support for your course of large-scale reforms aimed at further dynamic development of the country, strengthening its international positions, and protecting the rights and interests of citizens,” Putin said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping also congratulated Mirziyoyev on his win, saying bilateral ties have achieved leapfrog development during their tenures, according to state news agency Xinhua.

In his congratulatory message, Xi expressed his readiness to work with Mirziyoyev to sustain and promote China-Uzbekistan comprehensive strategic partnership, noting that he highly values their good working relationship and personal friendship, the news agency added.
