Hungary attaches importance to cooperation with the Pacific countries, but NATO must not become an anti-China bloc, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in Vilnius.

"Japan and South Korea are our strategic partners, we have close political relations, and a lot of investment is coming to Hungary from the two countries," the minister of foreign affairs and trade reminded reporters at the NATO summit in Vilnius.

"It is at least as important that NATO does not get such an anti-China edge, so let us make it clear that NATO is not an anti-China organisation, it was not created against China, its current operation is not against China, and we do not consider China a risk, an adversary or an enemy," he said.

"We ourselves believe that cooperation with China, like cooperation with South Korea and Japan, offers enormous opportunities and great chances," Szijjártó added.

On Wednesday,  Beijing lashed back at NATO's accusation that China challenges the bloc's interests and security, and opposed any attempt by the military alliance to expand its footprint into the Asia-Pacific region, Reuters reported.  According to the news agency,  in a strongly worded communique, NATO said the People's Republic of China (PRC) challenged its interests, security and values with its "ambitions and coercive policies".

The Chinese mission to the European said in a statement on Tuesday the China-related content of the communique disregarded basic facts, distorted China's position and policies, and deliberately discredited China. "We firmly oppose and reject this," it said.
