Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is growing in stature and size, the Daily Pioneer wrote, after the organisation held a virtual summit attended by all heads of state this week, hosted by India.

India wants to make full use of these leadership opportunities in multilateral and regional platforms to drive its newfound strategic agenda at a global scale while deepening bilateral ties with its key allies and partners, the newspaper noted.

Iran gained full membership at the end of the 23rd summit of the SCO Council of Heads of States. "The member states stressed the historical significance of the admission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the SCO as a full Member State," said the New Delhi Declaration issued at the end of the summit, released on Tuesday evening, according to Anadolu Agency. The declaration also stated that Belarus is set to become a full member next year. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the host of the summit held virtually, said he was "happy Iran is becoming a member of SCO grouping," adding that the summit would also pave the way for Belarus to become a permanent member of the bloc.

President Xi Jinping's speech at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization virtual summit is a powerful reiteration of China's commitment to peace, multipolarity, multilateralism and the principles of the United Nations Charter, global experts have said, according to China Daily. Xi emphasized the importance of member states enhancing strategic communication and coordination, resolving differences through dialogue, promoting cooperation instead of competition, showing genuine respect for each other's core interests and major concerns, and providing firm support for each other's efforts toward development and rejuvenation.

Speaking by video link from the Kremlin, Putin praised the organization for “playing an increasingly significant role in international affairs, making a real contribution to maintaining peace and stability, ensuring sustainable economic growth of the participating states, and strengthening ties between peoples,” AP reported. He thanked the member states for supporting Russian authorities during the short-lived mutiny mounted by Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, and said the West had turned Ukraine into “a virtually hostile state — anti-Russia.” Putin has frequently lashed out at the West for its support of Ukraine in the war. “The Russian people are united as never before,” he said. “The solidarity and responsibility for the fate of the fatherland was clearly demonstrated by the Russian political circles and the entire society by standing as a united front against the attempted armed rebellion.”
