The partnership between Hungary and Kyrgyzstan has developed more strongly over the last 6-8 years, with 2018 being a milestone in bilateral relations, when Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary, visited Kyrgyzstan for talks with former Kyrgyz Prime Minister Sooronbay Dzhenbekov, according to an analysis
by the Oeconomus Economic Research Foundation. Hungarian assets are the main determinant of Hungarian-Kyrgyz trade relations.
In 2022, the value of Hungarian exports exceeded USD 20 million: mainly pharmaceuticals, broadcasting equipment, chemical goods, agricultural products and vehicles and transport equipment were exported.In 2022, the value of Kyrgyz exports was also at a record high, reaching a total of USD 1.03 million: mainly arms parts and accessories, fuel wood, refined petroleum, and tobacco.
The milestone in bilateral relations was marked by Viktor Orbán's visit to Bishkek, the meeting of the Kyrgyz-Hungarian Strategic Council in Budapest in 2021, and when bilateral cooperation was upgraded to the level of a real strategic partnership in 2022.
This year's visit by the Foreign Minister to Bishkek, in addition to diplomatic talks, also covered student exchange programs in higher education.
1. Progress was also made on the plans for the Hungarian-Kyrgyz Development Fund, with the parties agreeing to gradually increase the capital of the Fund from the previous US$16 million to US$50 million.
2. A decision was also taken to connect the two capitals by air, with the launch of a Budapest - Bishkek - Budapest flight.
3. 2022 saw another joint project in the cooperation: the Hungarian A-Híd Zrt. joined the Kyrgyz hydropower development project.
