Pakistan has a vested interest in the region in maintaining cordial and brotherly relations with Iran and Saudi Arabia, Syed Sajjad Haider, Pakistan's former ambassador to Kuwait writes in an op-ed on Stratheia.

The diplomat published an opinion piece on the website in the context of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia last month, mediated by China. In this trilateral arrangement, China will be the main beneficiary since it enjoys a strategic economic partnership with Iran and Saudi Arabia, he argues.

Regarding his country's relations with Iran and Saudi Arabia, the former ambassador recalls that "in the past, these relationships have been deeply mired and impacted by cross-border terrorism and sectarian clashes. A balanced approach towards both countries is important for addressing such challenges".

"Improved relations between the two regional powers could also lead to a more stable and peaceful Middle East which would be beneficial for Pakistan as well as other countries in the region including Afghanistan," he stresses.
