Kazakhstan’s scientific sector is gaining momentum, with significant growth recorded in research activity, according to updated 2024 data from the InCites analytics platform, reports Zakon.kz.
Bulat Kenesov, head of the Center for Science and Technology Development under the National Academy of Sciences, highlighted that 2024 marked an important milestone in integrating Kazakh science into the global research community.
In 2024, Kazakh researchers published 3,176 articles and reviews in journals indexed in the Web of Science, representing a 20 per cent increase compared to 2023. This surge in publication volume helped Kazakhstan advance from 75th to 72nd place globally.
Progress was noted across several key scientific disciplines:

Among research institutes, the top contributors included:
Government bodies also played a significant role, with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education leading with 1,258 publications. Other key contributors included the Ministries of Agriculture, Energy, and Health.
Many of the publications appeared in high-ranking journals such as Scientific Reports, Applied Sciences, Sustainability, Molecules, IEEE Access, and Polymers. Kazakh researchers produced a total of 798 papers in MDPI journals, marking a 10 per cent increase over 2023.
Despite a slight drop in MDPI’s share of total publications—from 28 per cent to 25 per cent—Kazakhstan ranked 8th globally among 163 countries publishing over 100 papers in indexed journals, surpassing numerous peers in Eastern and Southern Europe.
“These results show the dynamic development of national science and the success of research support measures. Kazakhstan met its 2024 goal of reaching 72nd place globally,” Kenesov said.
According to the national strategy, Kazakhstan aims to rise to 71st place in 2025 and reach 65th by 2029.
