Kazakhstan’s scientific community is surging ahead, with new data revealing a 20 per cent jump in research publications in 2024, propelling the country from 75th to 72nd in global rankings. Progress spans key fields from natural sciences to engineering, driven by universities, research institutes, and government efforts, marking a significant step in integrating Kazakh science into the global arena.

Kazakhstan’s scientific sector is gaining momentum, with significant growth recorded in research activity, according to updated 2024 data from the InCites analytics platform, reports Zakon.kz.

Bulat Kenesov, head of the Center for Science and Technology Development under the National Academy of Sciences, highlighted that 2024 marked an important milestone in integrating Kazakh science into the global research community.

In 2024, Kazakh researchers published 3,176 articles and reviews in journals indexed in the Web of Science, representing a 20 per cent increase compared to 2023. This surge in publication volume helped Kazakhstan advance from 75th to 72nd place globally.

Progress was noted across several key scientific disciplines:

  • Natural sciences: 1,872 publications, up 21 per cent, ranking 66th globally

  • Engineering and technology: 1,133 publications, up 20 per cent, ranking 66th

  • Medicine and healthcare: 533 publications, up 19 per cent, ranking 81st

  • Agricultural sciences: 205 publications, up 24 per cent, ranking 74th

  • Social sciences: 332 publications, up 3 per cent, ranking 72nd

  • Humanities and arts: 94 publications, up 16 per cent, ranking 62nd

Kazakhstan’s leading universities by publication count in 2024 were:

  • Nazarbayev University with 834 publications, ranked 1,237th globally

  • Al-Farabi Kazakh National University with 571 publications, ranked 1,617th

  • Gumilyov Eurasian National University with 391 publications, ranked 2,047th

  • Satbayev University with 233 publications, ranked 2,719th

  • Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University with 123 publications, ranked 3,602nd

Among research institutes, the top contributors included:

  • Institute of Nuclear Physics – 124 publications

  • Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Modeling – 81 publications

  • National Center for Biotechnology – 47 publications

  • Institute of Information and Computational Technologies – 36 publications

  • Institute of Combustion Problems – 34 publications

Government bodies also played a significant role, with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education leading with 1,258 publications. Other key contributors included the Ministries of Agriculture, Energy, and Health.

Many of the publications appeared in high-ranking journals such as Scientific Reports, Applied Sciences, Sustainability, Molecules, IEEE Access, and Polymers. Kazakh researchers produced a total of 798 papers in MDPI journals, marking a 10 per cent increase over 2023.

Despite a slight drop in MDPI’s share of total publications—from 28 per cent to 25 per cent—Kazakhstan ranked 8th globally among 163 countries publishing over 100 papers in indexed journals, surpassing numerous peers in Eastern and Southern Europe.

“These results show the dynamic development of national science and the success of research support measures. Kazakhstan met its 2024 goal of reaching 72nd place globally,” Kenesov said.

According to the national strategy, Kazakhstan aims to rise to 71st place in 2025 and reach 65th by 2029.
