Indonesia has designated five scenic places as super priority tourist destinations in a drive to end the reliance on the world-famous resort island of Bali.

In order to redirect Bali’s tourism growth away from mass tourism and towards quality tourism, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Indonesia, is attempting to strengthen control over the tourism sector on Bali Island, Nikkei Asia reported.

During a Bali tourism coordination meeting, he recommended tightening control over Bali tourism by increased enforcement against law violations, a tourism entry fee, and entry screening of tourists from countries whose people are deemed to disturb public order in Bali.

“In the meantime, we will focus on taking action against public order violations (in Bali). Moreover, I also ask for the realization of the implementation of a tax on tourists entering Indonesia,” Pandjaitan said in a post on his official Instagram account on Monday.

The incentives would be good for funding tourism promotion and attractions in Indonesia, he said, and would be consistent with regulations in other countries with a robust tourism business.

“I also ask you to promptly study the proposed disincentive policy for foreign tourists from countries whose nationals are problematic here. It is important that arriving foreign tourists be (those) selected properly,” the coordinating minister said at the meeting.
