The World Puzzle Federation held this year’s Sudoku and Logic Puzzle World Championships in Beijing, China, where the competition was once again dominated by Asian and American teams. However, among the European teams, the Hungarian national team ranked among the best, István György, the captain of the Hungarian team, announced on Saturday. István György explained that participants who qualified through national selection competitions came from nearly thirty countries to Beijing, where they spent several days solving extremely difficult puzzles. These puzzles are language- and culture-neutral, designed to effectively measure players’ logical abilities, he explained.
He highlighted that the members of the Hungarian team were selected by the National Association of Puzzle Solvers (ROE) through a multi-round competition series.
Japan, China, and the United States took the podium in both competitions, with awards in both individual and team categories.
This year, the Hungarian team placed eighth in the Sudoku World Championship—the second-best among European teams—and finished sixth in the Logic Puzzle competition, ranking third among European teams. Individually, Zoltán Horváth was the best Hungarian player, finishing 37th and 19th in the respective competitions.
He also mentioned that, based on the decision of the World Puzzle Federation’s general assembly, Hungary will host the Sudoku and Puzzle World Championships for the fourth time next year. The event will take place in Eger at the end of September 2025. The selection competition for the Hungarian team will start at the beginning of next year, organized by the ROE.
