Hungary intends to remain the number one European destination for Chinese investments, as these contribute significantly to the performance and transformation of the economy – declared Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó on Friday in Budapest.

The minister attended a working breakfast with executives of Chinese companies, where he emphasized that Hungary is proud to have become the top European destination for investments from the East Asian country. The government’s aim is to maintain this position, as it greatly contributes to the performance and transformation of the economy.

He explained that Hungary respects the realities of global politics and the world economy, and firmly opposes the politicized and ideologized approaches taken by certain European Union leaders.

“We believe that obstructing or even just restricting Chinese–European economic cooperation would cause serious economic difficulties for the entire European economy,” he warned. “We side with the actors of the economy. If something works well in the economy, politicians should refrain from ruining it. And Hungary is the best example of how cooperation between Western and Chinese economies can bring significant benefits to both the West and China,” he added.

Péter Szijjártó expressed the view that Hungary proves Europe can derive substantial economic benefits from cooperation with Chinese companies.

“Hungary is proof that Europe can respond effectively to the major technological revolution taking place in the world if it works closely with China. Hungary is also proof that Europe can successfully navigate the global transformation of the automotive industry if it does not restrict cooperation between European and Chinese companies,” he said. “We firmly reject the idea of dividing the world into blocs again. We strongly stand for a world based much more on connectivity and global cooperation grounded in mutual respect,” he continued.

The minister concluded by identifying as a key economic policy objective that Hungary should continue to be the number one destination for Chinese investments in Europe.

“Last year, 34 percent of all Chinese investments in Europe came to Hungary, and the year before that it was 44 percent. In 2020, 2023, and 2024, Chinese companies brought the largest volume of investment to our country,” he reported. “In our assessment, these Chinese investments have consistently involved cutting-edge technology and reliable jobs for Hungary, in large numbers. Without these investments, both the Hungarian economy and Hungary itself would be poorer,” he summarized.
