This year marks the 75th anniversary of Hungarian–Vietnamese relations. On this occasion, we are taking a closer look at Vietnam and the country’s economic development, which has been remarkably impressive in recent years and decades. In light of this diplomatic milestone, our aim is not only to present the country but also to draw inspiration from its economic and foreign policy achievements, and to adapt its proven strategies—such as bamboo diplomacy—for Hungary. Of course, not the bamboo itself, but this diplomatic approach.
The Secretary General of Vietnam’s ruling party introduced the concept of bamboo diplomacy in 2016, and it has since been promoted as the cornerstone of Vietnam’s successful foreign policy. The key strategic features of the bamboo diplomacy are:
In other words, Vietnam has skilfully balanced between major powers in recent years, particularly between China and the United States amidst the current trade war. It supports multilateral relations, maintains strong ties with ASEAN countries, has hosted major international events such as APEC, and preserves friendly relations with countries from both East and West. Vietnam safeguards its strategic autonomy while pursuing a foreign policy that is conflict-averse yet firm.
Hungary’s Eastern opening policy can be seen as a form of Hungarian bamboo diplomacy, as Hungary likewise places great importance on national interests, independence, and sovereignty. It has also built strong relations with global powers, including the United States, China, Russia, Türkiye, and others.
It is clear that the leaders of the two countries share similar views on the global order and international relations in the 21st century. This shared outlook has contributed to the significant achievements in economic, educational, and cultural cooperation between Hungary and Vietnam as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Vietnam’s Western opening and Hungary’s bamboo diplomacy will continue to bring success to both nations for the next 75 years.
