No new members have been admitted to BRICS, but partners have, and the door remains open. At the summit in Kazan, Xi Jinping called for peace and Vladimir Putin sent a message to the West.

Already 30-35 countries have expressed interest in joining but have decided not to admit new members for the time being, according to press reports on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. The grouping originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia recently joining. The grouping accounts for almost half the world's population and a third of its GDP.

According to press reports, the criteria for joining were worked out at the recent summit, but no new members were added. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that BRICS is open to all who share their values. Thirteen countries have signed so-called partnership agreements. These are:

1. Malaysia
2. Indonesia
3. Vietnam
4. Thailand
5. Algeria
6. Belarus
7. Bolivia
8. Cuba
9. Kazakhstan
10. Nigeria
11. Türkiya
12. Uganda
13. Uzbekistan

Xi Jinping calls for peace

On the closing day of the BRICS Summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the BRICS to persevere in maintaining peace and establishing common security, including promoting the alleviation of the crisis in Ukraine and paving the way for a political settlement.

According to MTI, he said, "BRICS countries should be a stabilizing force in maintaining peace, strengthening global security governance and seeking solutions to acute problems, while addressing the causes and symptoms". He urged the achievement of a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and to prevent the spread of war in Lebanon. He expressed his conviction that the group should take the lead in reforming the global economic governance system. He outlined that China will always take care of the global south regardless of changes in the international situation.

Vladimir Putin sent a message to the West

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed at the enlarged meeting to discuss the creation of an independent platform for BRICS free from dictates. This, he said, would help unlock the potential of the growing economies of the alliance's member states and boost investment in the Global South and East, including in major infrastructure and technology projects. He also called on interested countries to cooperate on projects such as the North-South International Transport Corridor and the Northern Sea Route, MTI reported.

He criticized what he saw as the West's use of Ukraine to create critical threats to Russia's security while ignoring Moscow's vital interests and legitimate concerns about the violation of the rights of its ethnic Russians. "Now they make no secret at all of their goal to inflict a strategic defeat on our country," Putin was quoted as saying by the news agency. "I say it openly: these are illusory calculations, which can only be made by those who do not know Russia's history, who do not take into account the unity, spiritual strength and cohesion of its people forged over centuries," he warned.
