Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi meets Hungarian leaders

Wang Yi, the director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee arrived in Budapest on Sunday, as part of his week-long tour in Europe.

The senior Chinese diplomat  - who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee - held talks in Rome, Paris and the Munich Security Conference last week. After Budapest, he travels to Moscow.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán received Wang Yi at a private dinner on Sunday. According to Xinhua, the diplomat stressed that “China stands ready to work with Hungary to fully promote friendly exchanges, continuously deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and strive for more democratic international relations and a multi-polarized world”.

Noting that the year 2023 marks the tenth anniversary of Chinese President Xi Jinping's proposal of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Wang called on both sides to continue to strengthen high-quality cooperation under the BRI, Xinhua adds.

Viktor Orbán stressed that Hungary is steadfast in its policy of friendship with China and attaches great importance to cooperation with China in various fields. According to the news agency, the prime minister thanked China for its selfless help for long and its COVID-19 vaccines which have saved many lives, noting that the Hungarian side will continue to make unremitting efforts to promote EU-China relations.

Wang Yi held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó on Monday. According to Szijjártó, as foreign minister, Wang Yi has done a great deal to improve relations between China and Hungary, from which our country has benefited enormously. “Hungary has been consistently high on the investment map of the largest Chinese companies and our trade turnover is regularly over 10 billion dollars,” the Hungarian minister said.

The senior Chinese diplomat attended the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, where he exchanged views with among others US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba.

At a panel talk, Wang Yi said that “as President Xi Jinping repeatedly stressed, all people are members of one global village and we belong to a community with a shared future”. “Human Society must not repeat the old path of antagonism, division and confrontation, and must not fall into the trap of zero-sum game, war and conflict,” he added.
