The 2024 Paris Paralympics are over and - for the sixth consecutive time - China finished top of the gold medal table, a sporting feat which began in 2004 in Athens, Euronews reports.

The team broke 29 world records, succeeding in several disciplines including swimming, athletics and table tennis, the news site adds.

The Paris Paralympics set the record for the highest number of delegations (169) and sold 2.4 million tickets out of an available 2.5. Around 4,400 athletes participated.

Addressing the closing ceremony at a packed Stade de France, chief Paris 2024 organiser and former gold medal-winning canoeist Tony Estanguet said the six weeks of the Paralympics and the Olympics would remain “etched in people’s memories”, Al-Jazeera reports.

“This summer, France had a date with history, and the country showed up,” he said.

The next Paralympics will take place in Los Angeles in 2028.
