Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi wrapped up a whirlwind visit to Islamabad with a pledge of continued support for Pakistan and a call to accelerate the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a key component of the Belt and Road Initiative.

In meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior officials, Wang vowed to strengthen counterterrorism cooperation amid persistent attacks targeting Chinese nationals. “China has always been Pakistan’s most reliable partner and strongest backer,” Wang said, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement.

He urged both sides to fast-track the CPEC “2.0 upgrade,” focusing on agriculture, industry, and mining, and pledged to help Pakistan “comprehensively improve self-development ability” and boost resilience against external shocks.

Sharif called for expanded cooperation in aerospace, IT, and infrastructure, while promising maximum security for Chinese workers and projects.

China has invested over US$65 billion in CPEC, including the Gwadar Port linking Xinjiang to the Arabian Sea. The next phase involves developing special economic zones, which Islamabad says will turn Pakistan into an export hub and generate foreign currency to service its debt.
