On September 25, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said he considers relations with eastern countries a “political, cultural and economic guarantee” and expressed his desire to strengthen relations between Syria and China in various fields.

According to a statement from the Syrian presidency, Assad met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, and the Syrian side thanked the Chinese government for the country’s support in dealing with the earthquake disaster and in the fight against terrorism. The Syrian president added that relations between the two countries will be further strengthened through President Xi Jinping’s three initiatives to develop economic and cultural cooperation and create joint investment projects under the “Belt and Road” Initiative.

The Syrian Presidency quoted the Chinese Premier as saying that greater coordination and cooperation is needed to safeguard the common interests of the two countries and stressed the continued support for Syria. The Chinese side added, “China is pleased to announce the establishment of strategic relations at the meeting between Presidents Assad and Xi Jinping to support Syria... and promote reconstruction and stability building.”
