According to Car News China, the Chinese automotive company SAIC is in discussions with the Spanish government to establish a production plant in Europe. The portal also reports that Hungary and the Czech Republic are contenders for the project. CNC notes that Eastern European countries might be more favorable due to their lower labor costs.
SAIC aims to make a swift decision to enable the construction of the plant to commence as soon as possible, with plans to start producing the first vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2027. This decision is directly linked to the European Union's punitive tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports, with SAIC receiving the highest tariff at 37.6 percent.
Last year, SAIC's MG 4 was the sixth best-selling electric vehicle in the European Union, with over 72,000 units sold. This model is highly likely to be produced at the new European plant, along with the recently announced MG S5 SUV.
